Now followed by Barging On.

A disused barge bought in Holland, a cargo hold converted in Belgium and a cruising lifestyle discovered in France. The true story of how and why a British couple built their home and their dream on water.

Peter and Meg realise their dream of sailing the Mediterranean, then realise Meg wasn’t designed to be an ocean going sailor. Taking their yacht to England via inland France, they discover an alternative escape from noise, traffic and junk mail. A floating home, complete with brick fireplace and geraniums, becomes a maybe, one day, new dream.

They find Colibri too easily. Making the decision to buy this sixty-year-old, eighty-seven foot barge is much tougher, but that is only the beginning of tough. An antique toilet that swallows buttocks simply has to go, and persuading a cargo hold to become a three bed des res entails some tricky episodes.

An embarrassingly verbose parrot, a cat that wants to walk on water and a hose that can lift a man off the ground with a rampant ton of water are just a few of the ingredients in a complicated life. Then there is the question of ballast, and shifting several tons of concrete slabs, delivered in pouring rain the very day the cat puts Peter’s back out, was not part of Meg’s euphoric dream.

Through it all, France and her waterways beckon. For her forty-eighth birthday, Meg receives a rope, a ladder and freedom, and a half converted barge leaves Belgium and heads for France. The River Meuse in flood, Strasbourg by Easter, Dijon for Summer and a barge-crashing spotter on an impossible to negotiate canal bridge are all part of their travelling joys. Choosing where to moor their home for the night, dining beneath the stars and cycling down the towpath to find bread for breakfast and returning with sunflowers instead becomes a way of life.

After spending winter in beautiful Burgundy, Peter’s sabbatical year is over. But a litre of red Chateau Plastique consumed on a moonlit deck helps them to decide that it’s easier to ignore the white window envelope from the bank than the onset of spring and those other boaters happily planning summer cruising. That’s it, then. They’ll just have to keep sailing into the sunset, won’t they?

The sequel to this book, Barging On, is now available in the store and as a paperback.

On Wet Foundations eBook Mary Cassells

I am almost finished with this book and have really enjoyed it. Am a big fan of travel autobiographies in the French region and have read many - some a lot better than others. This one is definitely on the better side of the scale. It offers a completely different view of Belgium and French life on water. In short, the story is about purchasing an old barge in Holland, doing most of the remodel in Belgium, and eventually traveling throughout France. I found the author to be both honest in her accounts and also laugh out loud funny without trying to be overly witty. She manages to make even boring parts of a remodel interesting and paints beautiful pictures of the countryside. If you want a true account, both good and ugly, of what it is like to both remodel a boat and travel Europe's canal systems year round, this book is it. Thank you Ms. Cassells - it was a fun ride! You left me wanting more so I have just ordered your next book 'Barging On'

On Wet Foundations eBook Mary Cassells Reviews

I enjoyed working on this barge with the delightful author! You do actually feel as if you are with Mary and Peter...working, sitting on the deck, drinking wine. Good read. Now I really do want to barge.
This was a good yarn about a couple who bought a barge and traveled the waterways in Belgium and France. There were moments when a bit more depth in the particular story the author was telling could have given us a better insight into the people, though. The worst thing about the book was the frustrating misuse of the apostrophe. Its in its possessive form does not have an apostrophe!! What was the editor doing?
Ever wanted to do a European river cruise? Join Mary Cassells' characters Meg & Peter and I guarantee that by the time you finish this book, you will feel like a barging pro; and, you will know more about the rivers, canals, locks and weirs of France than you ever imagined; and, you will have had a ton of fun along the way.
I almost gave up on this book early on but went back to it when I ran out of anything else to read, and I'm so glad I did. It was amusing, interesting and and gave me itchy feet to do something similar, I have just bought the next one in the series so, hope it's as good.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which reads as a story, nit just a list of visited places. The evolution of the barge is thoroughly interesting. Great book.
This is a really good book. It tells the story of how a couple made their dream come true by buying a barge, remodeled it into a living space and cruised the canals of Europe. I was absolutely fascinated reading how this couple did it. Their stories and vivid descriptions of the french countryside was just wonderful. The only thing I'd like to know is when this story took place. They don't really talk about when everything was happening.
As we spent some time this summer on a canal barge on the Canal du Midi in France we were interested in reading a book about an English couple who actually spend most of their year living on one. They bought a very old barge and proceeded to gut the interior themselves and put in bedrooms and other living areas. Not something that I would want to tackle myself but it makes interesting reading. Mary Cassells who is called Meg by the way is a real character. In fact I found the story so interesting that I purchased her next book.
